Leadership Development

Leadership is about behavior.  Things we do communicate to others that we are, or aren’t, leaders.  Most leaders I work with are trying to do a good job, but they have a blind spot concerning behaviors that promote their being perceived as leaders.

Leadership is like the wind.  We can’t see the wind, but we can see its effects—in trees swaying in the breeze, in soil erosion, or in finding our gas grill on its side in the middle of the yard instead of standing upright on the patio.  (This has actually happened a few times.)  

In the same way, we can’t really see “leadership,” but we can see its effects.  Those effects could be greater sales revenue, or more promotions to higher positions, or less time spent resolving disputes that should be resolved by the people or departments who are feuding.

Whatever those “effects” of leadership are, we need to identify them, and then measure them.  It’s the only way to tell whether we’re accelerating our leadership.
