Good communication, job skills key to advancement

While
many people resolve to go on weight-reducing diets in the New Year, if you
wish to advance your career in 2004 you need to put on another kind of
"bulk," a human resources consultant advises.
Employees who can motivate others carry weight when companies scout the
cubicles for someone to promote.
"Improve your communication skills, particularly your speaking skills,"
says Terry Wall, of T.G. Wall Management Consulting in Washington Township.
"Join Toastmasters or take a speech course. You may not be giving
speeches on your job, but good verbal skills give you an edge in your
relationships with others," Wall suggests.

But
polished, expressive conversation is not enough.
"Generally people get promotions because they are darn good at what they
do," said Wall.
He encourages go-getters to tone up their job muscles to become the best
that they can be. To identify flabby skill areas, check with people you
trust such as co-workers and bosses, he said.
