Speaker Urges Teachers To Make Changes Positive By Joyce Vanaman, Staff Writer August 27, 1999
The theme of the three-day Millville Summer Institute for Millville teachers and those from its sending districts was "Making Positive Change."
"To make positive change, you must make change positive," said Terry Wall, president of T.G. Wall Management Consulting of Gloucester Township, Camden County. Wall was the concluding speaker Thursday at the institute held at Cumberland County College in Vineland. It was sponsored by the Millville Public Schools, Rowan University, Goals 2000, and School to Careers program.
Wall emphasized that teachers have a responsibility for making positive change. "Why do we resist change?" he asked. "It's because of a dirty, four-letter word called 'fear'-fear of the unknown, fear of the complex, fear of what we don't quite understand.
"Be proud of your professionalism, and have self-confidence in what you do," Wall advised. Pointing out that in some cases teachers spend more time with students than the students' parents, Wall stressed the responsibility that teachers have to be good role models. "If you have pride in your profession and your role as a teacher, you will hold yourself accountable and not participate in 'blamestorming'," Wall said. "You can't be worried about what others do."
He emphasized that their focus should be on what they are doing in their respective classrooms. The students are their primary responsibility, he said.
